Shevlin Park, Central Oregon mountain biking
Rarely am I in front of the camera. But today, Angelique Valdez got some shots of me on one of my favorite trail rides in Bend — Shevlin Park loop. A fast sprint with a few rewarding climbs.

Kirt Voreis, Enduro Down Hill
This is the third in the series of where does Kirt Voreis ride with his Specialized Enduro. Down Hill mountain biking requires skill, daring, confidence, and a bike that withstands abuse. Typically you wouldn’t downhill on the same mountain bike you trail ride with. The Enduro challenges this. Though a “big” single track bike and “small” DH bike, the Enduro rocks both worlds. From fast descents to technical corners, to big air, in the hands of Kirt, the Enduro very well defines the all mountain ride. Featured in this gallery is Kirt at the Cline Butte DH course with AllRide team rider Austin Aldrich.

National Beard and Moustache Championships parade in Bend
Bend hosted the first-ever National Beard and Moustache Championships at the Les Schwab Amphitheater on Sat., June 5. Toot Joslin, Beard Team USA MemberBeard Team USA, fresh off its stunning victory over Germany at last year’s World Beard and Moustache Championships, selected Bend from a group of more than 25 bidding cities, resorts and hotels. The event promised unique family-friendly entertainment for young and old, bearded and clean shaven, dedicated fans and newly curious.
The parade was crowded with beards and mustaches, and with cameras documenting the event.
Kirt Voreis and James Reigner, AllRide, and the Phil’s Trail Head Pump Park
An artist creates from what is given. Kirt Voreis and James Regner create the path for mountain bikers to jump, pump, bank, and otherwise express themselves. What do you do with a reclaimed dirt road leading from a parking lot trail-head to a network of single track mountain biking trails? Make features, of course. More images here.
Kirt Voreis 5.24.10
Kirt Voreis called me up to do some shooting at his old rail road dirt jump course. Santa Cruz rider and Bend local Jamie Goldman was to be there as well as some of Kirt’s AllRide team. Hell ya! Unfortunately, shit happens. After a few warm up laps, some 360s, and Toboggan saddle grabs, Kirt concussed himself on a hard landing. A trip to the ER became the photo session. Kirt was joking with the hospital staff and laughing at himself. After a long career as a professional mountain bike racer Kirt understands the risks and continues to push the limits for the love of the ride. I look forward to the next session! COTA’s Spring Fling Trail Building Party
Central Oregon Trail Alliance held it’s annual Spring Fling trail building party. Numerous well organized and equipped volunteers gathered in the woods on the outskirts of Bend to create the new Steve Larsen memorial trail. COTA has a grant to build 35 miles of single-track in the Wanoga complex within the next year, and is about half way there. Trail builders, under the leadership of lead builder Chris Kratsch, carved about 4 miles of trail during the few hour event, then finished the day with a BBQ and Deschutes brew at Pine Mountain Sports. COTA gathers every Wednesday at Pine Mountain Sports in the evening to build and maintain the growing network of trails in the Bend area.

Ride of Silence
The Ride of Silence rode through the streets of Bend tonight.
“To HONOR those who have been injured or killed.
To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here.
To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD.
THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET!
On May 19, 2010, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. In 2003,
Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.
The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registrationfees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.”

Top Shelf: Face of Bend’s HipHop Scene
Hip, hop, you don’t stop. Music is an external beat. Beat, beat, the heart is an internal beat. How do you tell people what you feel inside, what is in your heart. Sing it, of course. Or, as Gabe Van Eikeren and Lyndon Hansen do, rap it out loud. Gabe (aka, Amsterdam) and Lyndon (aka, Middle) make up the lyric component of the Bend hip-hop group Top Shelf.

Bend Winter Fest, 2010 (Saturday Night)
Big Air snowboarders. The crowd was there, the music, the photographers, and the amateur boarders (some with, perhaps, more ambition than talent.) The talent came in the form of flips, twists, and wall rides. Carnage occurred when riders came up short of the landing, either decking or bouncing off the sides of snow banks. There was blood and a back-boarding. All smiles and thumbs up though, made the spectacle a worthwhile event.
The beer was flowing and Hells Bells rocked the stage. Ah, Saturday night at Winter Fest. View more images at gallery,

Winter Fest, 2010 (Friday Night)
Every year, rather, every season Bend hosts (with title sponsors) public parties. It’s Winter and as such Winter Fest is back. Ice sculptures, fire dancers, food vendors, freebies, music, and sports. It’s a weekend family friendly thing, fun and consumption for all, with a gate entrance fee of $6.
Friday opening is skiers big air night, Saturday reserved for snowboarders. Down a ramp taller than most buildings in Bend, launching a kicker over a 40 foot gap, and landing in an in-run to a Mt. Bachelor made wall ride or rail. What a curiosity for onlookers. What a great way for amateur local athletes to express themselves outside the ski area parks. Ari Delashmutt, Mt.Bachelor Team Rider
Since Bend Oregon’s annual extravaganza WinterFest last year, I have had the pleasure to ski with and photography Ari Delashmutt, the 21 year old skier sponsored by Mt. Bachelor. I have documented his passion for skiing, which consists mostly in high speed laps and doing as many flips and twists as a person can possibly manage. His passion is genuine. His velocity is not slow. And his airs are ridiculous, which includes a switch double back (taking off backwards, back flipping twice, then landing backwards).
